Description

Sherbert Skies

When first putting the sky onto this piece I had a sudden memory of my favorite childhood treat: Rainbow Sherbert. The gently swirling pink, orange and white felt like the perfect background for the purple mountains of Vancouver Island, Texada Island and the Sunshine Coast.

Popham, an island within the Pasley Islands group, sits on the westernmost edge of Howe Sound overlooking the Salish Sea. The trees on Popham seem to be uniquely weathered perhaps due to the rocky island terrain and exposure to the elements that blow in off the sea. Arbutus, Douglas Fir and Western Hemlock all twist and turn into knarly shapes.

It was right here in 2022 that we encountered a pod of orca as we boated through the islands! A sudden wave of water ahead made us cautiously come to a full stop, after which a group surfaced right next to the marine station on Popham Island. Perhaps what we saw was a seal or sea lion fleeing ahead of our boat- we watched in amazement as the pod appeared to be hunting something right next to the island. After about 5 minutes we decided it was safe to start the boat to continue on our journey and ensure the orca could continue on theirs.
