Description
The Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina) is a small owl native to BC. With less than 6 individuals left in the wild in Canada it is critically endangered. The NSO natural habitat of old growth forest in a small corner of southwestern BC has been heavily impacted by human activity. In addition to habitat fragmentation and loss they face extreme pressure from competitive invasive species (including the Barred Owl).
Programs such as the Northern Spotted Owl Breeding Program, and over 300,000 hectares of protected habitat designated by the Government of BC, are aiming to help the species recover. The NSOBP currently has over 40 owls at the centre and are hoping to release 4 captive born owls into the wild this year.
