In observing nature over time we begin notice patterns. One of the most evident patterns, in addition to changing seasons, is time of day. In places such as bays and estuaries where tides also impact the behaviors of wildlife we are presented with an opportunity to experience a wide variety of activity throughout the course of a single day.
Early in the morning at dawn, when light begins to blush the sky, some of the first animals to rise are the birds. The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is one species that takes advantage of the calm conditions for an early morning hunt. They subsist primarily on fish, but will also forage for frogs, salamanders, turtles, snakes, insects, rodents, and other birds. An iconic species here on the west coast the Great Blue Heron can often be found standing very still along shorelines in early morning waiting very patiently for their next meal.
