Description

The gateway to Atl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound: Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver teters on the edge of Pacific Canada’s southernmost glacial fjord. It is a place brimming with life: both above and below the surface of the sea. The strong currents and mineral-rich waters tumble together to create a remarkable underwater landscape in this treasured Marine Protected Area.

Various cetaceans frequent Whytecliff including Orcas, Humpback Whales, Harbour Porpoises and Pacific White-Sided Dolphins. In this scene we see a family of Bigg’s Orcas, also known as Transients, who come here to hunt, socialize, and survive in the life-filled waters of Howe Sound. There are 4 different ecotypes of Orca found in Southern BC and Bigg’s are one of the largest and most common; with approximately 349 individuals that frequent these waters. They travel most often in genetically related family groups or pods but are sometimes seen traveling with others of their ecotype. They hunt seals, sea lions and other marine mammals, making Howe Sound and its’ rich waters an ideal habitat for them.

With Lookout Point in the foreground, Bowen Island (and Finisterre), Gambier Island, Mt. Wrottesly and the Sunshine Coast in behind, this sunset scene is an iconic vista for all those who are welcomed to the beautiful Howe Sound.
