Description
Grizzly Bears are intricately and intimately connected to the forest. It is said that the expansive hemlock and cedar forests of British Columbia’s coast are built upon the decaying bodies of salmon, and that they are dragged from the river onto the forest floor by animals such as Ursus arctos horribilis, the great Grizzly. As an apex predator their life cycle positively benefits entire ecosystems- from managing populations to the redistribution of nutrients within a vast and complex system. They rely on large tracts of intact forest and wilderness area to survive the persistent and increasing pressure of human encroachment.
In Japan there is a practice called ‘shinrin-yoku’ or Forest Bathing. It is the practice of immersing oneself in the forest for the benefit of awakening all of one’s senses. The Grizzly, by nature of being, does so without second thought. S/he roams a forest that she built, year upon year, millennia upon millennia, and that in turn sustains her existence. While we might find satisfaction bathing in a small parkland forest or suburban setting, to survive, the Grizzly relies on much, much more.
