Description

All of our senses contribute to the experience of nature, and the sound of a whale’s breath echoing over the ocean is one I will never forget. The Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is the largest species to frequent the Sea to Sky region, returning to the area only within the last 20 years or so after having been hunted to near extinction.

Healthy populations of krill and forage fish (such as herring and anchovy) are credited to helping encourage these whales to come back to our area, as they make a stop here on annual migrations between summer feeding grounds in BC and warmer winter breeding grounds in Hawaii and Central America. The ability for some of the smallest organisms in the ocean to sustain some of the largest is a testament to the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of healthy ecosystems.
