Description
There is a special place on Bowen Island, near the southwestern corner, a little jetty of rock that looks out over Collingwood Channel. From here you can clear see Georgia Strait and Vancouver Island, Worlcombe, Popham, Pasley, Mickey, Ragged, Keats, Mt. Elphinstone and Tetrahedron.
This rocky edge of Bowen is covered in Arbutus of all sizes and ages, twisting and turning out over the bluffs. I come here often to sit and clear my head, to look out over this favorite view and watch the birds and seals go by. Some days, when luck is on my side, some other special animals come by too. It was here where we saw our first humpback whale on Bowen which swam by so gracefully it still feels like a dream. Since then I’ve encountered countless humpbacks, porpoise and orca at this very spot.
This piece titled ‘Collingwood Point’ sat in my heart for over two years as I slowly let it come out, bit by bit, in an attempt to do justice to the beauty and soul of this remarkable spot. Two special encounters that helped inspire this painting can be seen here on my YouTube channel:
