Description
It is remarkable how much our experience in nature is impacted by the weather. We often value a sunny day over a rainy one, or a calm day over a stormy one. But there is something to be gleaned from every moment in the natural world. A cloudy and grey west coast day might seem dull at first glance but life abounds in the rainforest both above and below the surface.
The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) is the most common and widely distributed bear in Canada. With over 120,000 individuals in BC the stable population reflects its value within a healthy ecosystem. Bears act as a keystone species- they help regulate populations of prey, disperse seeds, and contribute to nutrient cycling through their scavenging and foraging habits. Often found along shorelines in the Sea to Sky region we consider ourselves lucky to witness a Black Bear foraging amongst a healthy intertidal zone.
