Arbutus menziesii, the Pacific Madrone, is a species of tree in the family Ericaceae native to the western coastal areas of North America. From British Columbia to California this tree often grows in association with Douglas Fir and is Canada’s only native broadleaf evergreen tree.
Arbutus are renowned for their unique peeling bark that displays a wide range of colors from dark rust/red to orange, yellow and shades of green. In spring they bear sprays of small bell-like flowers and in autumn red berries which are eaten by birds such as waxwings, thrushes, band-tailed pigeons, woodpeckers and robins.
Despite being drought tolerant and fast-growing the Pacific Madrone is in decline, mainly due to habitat loss and decreasing occurrences of natural forest fires throughout their coastal range.
