Description

Northern Resident Killer Whales (NRKW) are a distinct fish-eating ecotype of Orcinus orca. In comparison to the mammal-eating Biggs Orcas, the NRKW have evolved to eat a primary diet of nutritional Chinook Salmon. This helps to support the whales’ long migrations along the western coast from Alaska to Southern BC.

Almost every year in January and February the A42 family (Sonora and her offspring) make a visit to the Sea to Sky region, perhaps co-inciting with the beginning of the Chinook migration up the Fraser River around this time. Whenever they return to our area we treasure their time here and reflect on how the health of the Sea to Sky continues to impact all life; from the smallest species to the largest.
